Grainville Junior Novice Open 2009

66 budding junior tennis players had fun competing in 134 matches over the weekend (16/17 May). It is called the Novice tournament as those juniors that have previously won the tournament or any other Island wide singles tournament are ineligible to enter. The youngest participant was 6 years old (Luke Appleton) and the eldest was 15.

There were 26 in the largest category of 11 and under boys, split into 5 round robins. All boys played at least 4 matches over Saturday afternoon and the eventual winner, William Kaye played 9 matches including the final that ended at 7pm, narrowly defeating Casper Perry 4-3. The quality of play was awesome.

The U11 girls coped very well with gusting wind on Sunday with Phoebe Wauton winning all her matches and Stephanie Wellman finishing a close second.

Fellow Grainville Academy players, Timmy Boulter and Aidan Varela (age 7) played in the U9 final, Timmy winning 4-1. Mollie Luce came top of the 5 under 9 girls.

Charlie Hodges and David Martin played a good natured U13 boys’ final with David coming out as winner 6-0. Jordan Timms of Grainville Academy was the U13 girls’ winner.

The only match affected by rain was the last to be played on Sunday afternoon, the U15 boys’ final between best friends, Nicholas Boulter and Florian Bärlocher (both of Grainville Academy) which resulted in Nicholas triumphing by 6-4. Nicholas’ younger brother, Timmy also won a trophy the previous day.
